Chris Bertaut for Mayor

Purcellville Mayoral candidate, Chris Bertaut, talks about putting Citizens First.

Meet Chris Bertaut

I have had the honor of representing you on Town Council since 2020. I am running for Mayor of the Town of Purcellville, and I ask for your vote on November 5.

My wife and I chose to live in the Town of Purcellville to raise our children because we loved the small-town feel with friendly neighbors, youth sports, and civic activities for all ages.I am now a widower and the proud parent to my two sons, both Loudoun Valley High School graduates. We have lived in Hirst Farm for 20 years.

I served as Vice Mayor for three years—two under former Mayor Kwasi Fraser and one under the current mayor. I have always voted, as I promised, to reduce costs for the residents and businesses of Purcellville and drive efficiency in our government services. I will continue to fight to protect the town we all love.

I also serve on the Planning Commission, and have worked for the past two years to bring our zoning ordinance in line with the Town of Purcellville’s Comprehensive Plan.

The slow-growth Planning Commission has come under fireas the Town Council majority favors growing our town, which puts them at odds with what our citizens said in the Comprehensive Plan.

The Planning Commission just passed a Zoning Ordinance which protects our small-town neighborhoods, respects private property rights, and sustains our thriving and charming town.

I will never cave to pressure from developers. Lax zoning favors developers, not the residents of our town. I will not support annexation schemes which will change the character of Purcellville, increase traffic and the demand for services.

I voted against the utility rate increases this year because I believe the analysis was skewered to justify annexation schemes supported by my opponents. They try to justify their 16% and 18% rate increases with scare tactics and an unwillingness to spend less by operating our utilities more efficiently. They advocate development and mass urbanization, which will turn Purcellville into just another Ashburn.

My team stands for Citizens First, Slow Growth, Fiscal Responsibility, and Transparency.

Meet Ben Nett

My wife and I moved to Purcellville because we wanted to raise our children in a small town, away from the violence and chaos of the big city. Now on a second career with the Purcellville Police Department, I bring with me the experience of more than 20 years as TS/SCI cleared professional. In addition to serving in the Presidential Protective Division of the U.S. Secret Service and the National Clandestine Service of the CIA, I spent more than a decade leading one of the most sensitive and politically charges missions of the U.S. Government.

I possess substantial leadership and management experience and am committed to reducing our debt, finding solutions to our out-of-control utility costs, returning our police department to 24/7 coverage, and revitalizing our many dilapidated structures. I’m proud to run with my fellow slate of candidates, all of whom are civic-minded professionals dedicated to preserving our small town and improving our quality of life.

On a personal note, I voted for many of the incumbent members of Town Council—some of whom are running for re-election this November—but they did not keep the promises they made in the last election. Further, they failed to address the Town’s most pressing issues, instead choosing to cast blame and engage in misdirection. As the saying goes, “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.”

It’s time for a new slate of professionals to take office and bring a sense of decorum and maturity to Town Hall. With that, my colleagues and I pledge to keep out-of-character development out of Purcellville, manage growth in keeping with the aesthetics of our town, conduct a cost-benefit analysis before taking any particular course of action, and routinely solicit community input. I ask for your vote on November 5.

Susan Khalil for Town Council

Purcellville Town Council candidate, Sue Khalil, explains the threat of annexation.

Meet Sue Khahlil

I was born in Philadelphia and grew up in Bucks County, PA. I am the descendant of Italian immigrants who taught me a strong sense of family and hard work at a very early age. I was taught to stand up for my values and never be compromised. Personal integrity was paramount. There are a lot of things one can lose in life and recover from, but integrity is not one of them.

I enjoyed a career in mortgage banking asset management, overseeing multi-million-dollar portfolios of commercial, industrial, and multi-family real estate. I currently hold a position in finance for a national non-profit.

I have lived in Virginia since 1986 and moved to Purcellville in 2000. I chose the Town of Purcellville because I wanted to raise my family in a small town with a wonderful and caring community. My two grown children always look forward to coming back to the Town of Purcellville to visit.

I am running for Town Council because Purcellville is special and I want to keep it that way.

We will lose our hometown atmosphere if we allow our town to be overwhelmed by aggressive housing, and commercial and industrial growth through annexations. Nonsensical annexations will ruin what we have and further increase our intolerable high double digit utility increases.

We must not compromise our town’s charm and traditions. We should not create further financial burdens for our town residents. The potential financial effects on our residents will always be my first consideration when evaluating existing and new projects.

I will always put citizens first, not developers. We do not want to become Leesburg or Ashburn. I am not for extending our borders through annexations which will change the character of our town with more traffic, higher taxes and higher utility bills.

I am running on a citizens first, slow growth, fiscal responsibility, and transparency platform—and I ask for your vote.

Brian Green for Town Council

Purcellville Town Council candidate, Brian Green, talks about why we love Purcellville.

Meet Brian Green

My wife and I have lived in western Loudoun for 25 years and in the Town of Purcellville (Mayfair) for eight years. We chose Purcellville for its small town feel and quality of life. Purcellville is the perfect place to live and to raise our family, and our two sons have enjoyed the benefits of growing up in this special place.

I began my career in the television industry and transitioned into Telecommunications, Internet Service Providers and currently the Financial Industry. I have experience working in the areas of Engineering, Information Technology, Project Management and Customer Service in supporting and in management roles.

I currently serve on the Town of Purcellville’s Planning Commission where I have been working on the rewrite of the zoning ordinance—getting it in line with the town’s comprehensive plan. Since zoning is paramount to protecting our town, I advocate for our updated zoning ordinance that maintains our town’s character and preserves our way of life and well-being. I have been diligent in standing firm against inappropriate development pressure to allow uses which our citizens do not want.

Our town’s future should be determined by its citizens—not by outside developer interests who want to extend our borders and also allow uses in our town that will threaten our town’s charm. I am against annexations which will extend our borders and allow high density and out of character uses. This will also increase taxes, lead to higher utility rates, increase traffic and change our small-town dramatically. I ask you to vote for Chris Bertaut for mayor, and me, Brian C. Green, along with Carl B. “Ben” Nett, Susan F. Khalil and Jonathan “Jon” Arnburg.

Jonathan
